Foreclosed is designed to play like an interactive comic book, with heavily styled visuals and panel-based cinematics inspired by Max Payne. But Foreclosed isn’t just aping comic aesthetics for fun, though. It’s directly inspired by comics, with Merge Games’ referencing Frank Miller’s Hard Boiled specifically. As for its sci-fi setting and story elements, Merge cites another inspiration, Deus Ex. Between Max Payne, Frank Miller, and Deux Ex, hopefully gamers have a better understanding of just what Foreclosed is aiming for.

Gameplay in Foreclosed is definitely recognizable as influenced by Deux Ex, with cover-based shooter mechanics, as well as unique abilities that allow the player to jump into close combat. Behind the scenes is a skill tree system allowing players to customize their combat experience via a brain implant. A range of awesome futuristic weapons will also be on-hand.

The story of Foreclosed deals with a cyberpunk future where the protagonist’s identity has been foreclosed. That’s potentially due to the character’s implants not being “compliant,” though exactly what that means and how implants work in the greater Foreclosed universe remains to be explored.

Foreclosed releases Q2 2021 on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
