Speaking during the company’s latest financial briefing, CD Projekt RED president Adam Kiciński revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 will not have multiplayer at launch, which may be disappointing for fans excited to jump into a connected RPG experience right away. The executive compared Cyberpunk 2077’s roadmap to the studio’s other game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, saying, “First of all we’re going to deliver players a huge, story-driven role-playing game for a single player.”

Although the game won’t have multiplayer from the jump, Kiciński did note that “we already said in the past that we wanted our future projects to integrate online components at some point.” Kiciński is referencing comments that he himself made in November 2017, saying that online multiplayer features are “necessary” in order for Cyberpunk 2077 to have long-term success.

If CD Projekt RED realizes that multiplayer content is important, the developer is unlikely to ditch those plans altogether, even if that content won’t be available from launch. A leak also suggested that the game would feature social hubs and mini-games, and many fans will also accept that if these are to be implemented the right way, the developer will need some extra time.

Whenever this online multiplayer makes it into the game, Cyberpunk 2077 can expect the game to have no microtransactions. In the wake of the Star Wars Battlefront 2 microtransactions and loot box controversy, CD Projekt RED stated that Cyberpunk 2077 won’t be “greedy” like other games, which many took to mean that the game would not have exploitative, gambling-like mechanics. During the financial briefing, Kiciński stressed this once more, saying that the game would not have microtransactions or “any hidden things whatsoever.”

As CD Projekt RED continues to tease the game, fans will be wondering when they will get to see the hotly anticipated RPG in action. It has been several years since the game was first announced, yet it only has one trailer and many teasing comments from the developer to show for it. It does look as though the game will make an appearance at E3 2018, though, so watch this space.

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently without an official release date, and has yet to be announced for specific platforms.
